The Search for Planet X

This is the first ‘pure science’ story I’ve written in a while. It’s probably pretty boring to read, but it was fun to write.

Carrie Underwood scares me. She’s really smart, but you wouldn’t get that from her songs. First there was the hyper-religious Jesus take the wheel (in situations where your life is in danger, just give up because Jesus will save you), then the song with horrible relationship advice, Before he cheats (has he cheated on you? Don’t worry, go around destroying his stuff). Her latest is All-American Girl:

I have three main problems with this video - first, why couldn’t the father do everything he was going to do with his son with his daughter? Girls can’t play football or go fishing? Secondly, what is so special about this girl, other than being beautiful? Thirdly, why is it that with most of the jobs she keeps her blond hair, but for most of the professions that require years of university (nurse, teacher, scientist) her hair switches to brunette?

A skeptic’s guide to infomercials

I had a lot of fun writing this one.

Don’t be sick: get your vaccinations
The year in science

#32 was about refurbishing the U.S.’ nuclear arsenal, and hasn’t been published on the internet.

I’m back at school. This semester I’m taking Electromagnetism, Experimental methods in Physics, Intermediate Calculus 2, Honours Linear Algebra, and Foundations of Journalism 2, which means I’ve got three of the same profs. Nothing too much new with them, except that the prof who was a jackass to me last semester hasn’t done anything too jackassy yet, and my calc prof is retiring after this semester. My Electromagnetism prof is Swiss and speaks in a very funny accent - he calls phis pheees and thetas are TAAAI-tas. I’ve gotten into the habit of taking my textbook to class because his lectures consist of writing indecipherable squiggles on the blackboard. Experimental methods is fun too, although it can be really boring at times. So far I’ve put LEDs in liquid nitrogen to see their spectral output at really low temperatures and measured Planck’s constant with a photoelectric effect box.

Oh, and because I feel like bragging, I have the highest grade out of both sections of last semester’s Foundations of Journalism class. That’s despite not studying for the end of term exam because I thought it was open book and it turned out not to be, and being one of two science students in a class of about 90 students, most of whom want to be journalists. Yay me!

Sunrise over New York

January 7th, 2008

I’m back in my dorm room for my fourth semester of university. As usual, country music neighbor has his stereos a blastin’. It doesn’t really bug me, because I now have a working remote control for my own stereo, and can turn up the volume on the soundtrack to Sweeney Todd.

I spent four days at my uncle’s house in Hilliard. On Sunday I woke up at 4 in the morning to catch a tiny little plane to Newark and then another tiny little plane back to Halifax. The first plane only had 9 passengers (including the flight attendant), and the second plane was over 50% university students. The highlights of my trip were: flying over Manhattan at sunrise with a little bit of mist around the skyscrapers, flying over Nova Scotia and seeing it covered in snow, and seeing my childhood friend on the shuttle back to Halifax.

I really should have kidnapped one of my cousins. I miss them all right now, and my boyfriend can’t really compete on the cuteness factor. Just look at them:

My schedule is different than I expected it to be. I have my first class at 10:30, versus last semester at 9:30, and I only get out at 5:30. It means that I now have an hour between when I leave Shireff Hall for breakfast and when I go to my class in the physics building. It’s annoying. Should I wake up earlier to have more time to do stuff in morning, or should I stay up later at night to sleep in later in the morning?
