Gazette #30 - oh the catchy article titles

November 18th, 2007

Contains 20 per cent more bullshit than the next leading brand
My original title for this column was ‘Enriched with Bullshit’. I guess my editor thought that wasn’t catchy enough. In the physical edition of this piece, the title is ‘Take every meal with a grain of salt’.

I wish I was older

November 18th, 2007

I tend to forget my age.
It’s because my boyfriend and my two best friends are 21, two other close friends are over 30, and I know a lot more older people through their friends and the gazette. I’m two and a half months away from being 19, and they constantly remind me that I’m a baby. The legal age for drinking in Canada is 19.
Luckily, since I hang out with people who are older than me, I tend to be able to pass for 19. In September I was let in to the Graewood and given alcoholic drink tickets. Last weekend, I was let into the engineering bar for trivia night even though they’re not supposed to let me in. Even after I showed them my driver’s license at the door, which says in red letters right next to my picture that I’m under 19 until 2008. I guess they couldn’t read. Anyway, we won trivia - the prize was two pitchers of beer. Yes, I had some of it - only a cup though. I will not become an alcoholic overnight, though it was the first time I had beer and it wasn’t as gross as I had expected.
Unfortunately this Friday they had someone smart at the bar and I couldn’t get in. I ended up going home alone and spending the night doing calculus homework.
My trivia team lost. It’s because they are all arts/commerce students and they desperately needed a science student. One of the questions asked for the first 5 digits of e. I could have answered that. It’s 2.7182.
Help is only 77 days away.

Gazette #28 - Double Dose of an outraged science student

November 12th, 2007

The brain behind ’scientific racism’
Terrorism for monkeys

Okay, I’ll admit it - I’ve caved to my editor’s demands to be more controversial and opinionated. Good thing there was a lot of material handy.

On another note, I’ve updated my Amazon Wishlist. It contains to of the textbooks I need for next semester. I don’t know if anyone will be able to buy them off their website because they seem to be going out of stock. What I could really use right now is a set of ear plugs, because I’ve got Linear Algebra and Calculus tests to study for and my neighbor is blasting the country music again. Also, he has a new girlfriend, and let’s just say they’re very ‘active’.

Gazette #27 Contradictory Edits

November 4th, 2007

The Math behind Facebook
My editor requested that I write a column involving Facebook or the internet. So I wrote him this, about theories in a book I read this summer and applying it to Facebook. When I got to the Gazette meeting for that week, he told me it wasn’t ‘opinionated’ enough. So, I gave him carte blanche to edit it to his level of opinionatedness, telling him to go with the conclusion that “facebook imitates life”.
That’s what he did, at least in the first couple of paragraphs. But the problem is that my editor seems to have a deep hatred of Facebook (see the article about ‘Who’s using your personal information?’) and decided to include the line - It also goes to show that who you can be connected to on Facebook might not have so much to do with how popular you are., which contradicts my original opinion.
I’m not too upset about it. I don’t think anyone other than myself noticed it, but maybe I should pay more attention to the edited ‘opinions’ next time.
