There is Good Country Music…

August 10th, 2006

I usually hate country music, but, surprisingly, I have chosen it for the good music week. Also, the Dixie Chicks were in the province yesterday, and having a celebrity come to Nova Scotia is a big deal. It’s still a source of pride for people around here that Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke used to own a summer cottage in Antigonish County.
Dixie Chicks: Not Ready to Make Nice

That aside, the video has low cheese count and the music is pretty good. What makes it great is that it is popular now in the US, which sends the nice message that you can be a country music group and have an anti-Bush opinion without it killing your career. Take that, Fox News!

Dad’s Pond

August 10th, 2006

Dad came in the kitchen yesterday and declared: “The frog is spitting!”
This is what he meant. When I was a lot younger he got the idea to create an artificial above-ground goldfish pool, using cement bricks to hold in place a shower curtain over a shallow hole. He used to start up the pool sometime in June or July, and keep them out there until the fall. I have so many childhood memories around that pool: the time Mariek’s youngest sister stuck her hand in the pool, tried to drink the water, and subsequently being rushed inside by her frantic parents hoping she hadn’t gotten some fish bacteria in her toddler-sized system, and the time we came back from a weekend camping trip to find all of the pool fish lying around the edge with their heads bitten off (the work of one of the stray cats in our neighborhood, we guess).
However, in the past three or four years Dad has ceased maintaining the pool because it’s been too much work. Since I’ve been helping him with his garden this year I guess he’s figured he has time for it now, so yesterday I shovelled up the pool’s pebbles (which have since been covered with a fine layer of dirt, rotting leaves and whoever knows what else. I was using a small trowel and I thought it looked a bit like The Poopsmith somehow, and I was going to get a picture of that, but I figured no-one would get the reference). Then dad filled it up again and this is the result:

Me: But don’t you think it’s a bit strange to have a frog continously spit water out of a tube in its mouth?
Dad: Well, it could have been a human spitting, or peeing…
Or no statue at all?
In any case, Dad’s going to get the goldfish and guppies soon, so it’s time for another round of How many fish can survive being outside for a month?
