Gillis Gazette Archive

January 22nd, 2006

On the eve of the January 2006 issue’s publication, I have uploaded the previously unreleased digital versions for your viewing pleasure. The Gillis Gazette Online is at this moment still clandestine, but I’m going to see if the administration will let me put it on our school’s website.

Worming Ears

January 21st, 2006

Since Wednesday I’ve had the Hot Hot Heat’s You owe me an I.O.U stuck in my head. So catchy, clever, and downright annoying at the same time:
He was in the habit of taking things for granted
Granted, there wasn’t much for him to take
And the only thing constant was the constant reminder he’d never change
And so she yelled at him:
You owe me an IOU - owe me an IOU
You owe me an IOU
Don’t think that I’ll forget
You owe me an IOU - owe me an IOU
You owe me an IOU
Don’t think that I’ll forget
I know what I should get this time
Ah, but they can get away from it when their lead singer is this cute:

Central Nova: Canada’s Sexiest Election Riding

January 21st, 2006

For those non-canadian readers out there, there’s a big election going on in Canada on Monday. It will probably mean reigning in the conservative Stephen Harper as our new PM *shudders*. Young voter apathy is running high in our country, and it’s not that hard to see why. There just isn’t anything very exciting going on in Canada (of course Pierre probably disagrees), and the candidates just don’t seem to care about us, either. On Thursday we had a Student Vote, a type of mock election with the candidates of our region. Afterwards, it was funny to hear some of the more superficial reasons that teens voted the way they did. The number one and number two candidates are Alexis MacDonald for the NDP and Peter MacKay for conservative.
debate-East-Nova.jpg
Stupid Reasons for voting for Peter MacKay:
1. he’s a “good guy” who came to your 4-H meeting
2. your parents told you to
3. you’re a conservative catholic who wants the same-sex marriage and abortion laws revisited
4. you feel sorry because his girlfriend Belinda Stronach left him for the Liberals
5. he said he’s going to go after the Hell’s Angels, not ducks unlimited
6. you were going to vote for Alexis MacDonald but your ballot slipped and you put an “X” on his name instead
7. he was once the leader of the PC, and that’s not President’s Choice, btw
8. you don’t recognize any of the other candidate’s names
9. you actually like Stephen Harper
10. he was voted the “Sexiest man in Parliament” four years in a row
Stupid Reasons for voting Alexis MacDonald
1. She worked for Stephen Lewis, who recently gave a very popular speech at St. FX
2. She’s a woman
3. She’s 12 years closer in age to you than any of the other candidates
4. your parents didn’t command you to vote for her, but encouraged you to view Peter MacKay with “skepticism”
5. She came to talk to your English Class
6. Orange is a cool colour
7. she’s got the most signs in Antigonish
8. she’s a sort-of radical lefty and actually has a chance of winning compared to the Marxist-Leninist or Green Party candidates
9. You find bald men like Jack Layton sexy
10. guys think she’s hot
I voted for Alexis. I would have voted liberal, but there’s no way a creepy old guy with only two fingers on one of his hands could match the sexiness of MacKay or MacDonald. However, this being a student vote it didn’t really count, and MacKay will probably be elected again.

Yay, MacKay! Beat that crustation in your cute little bib!

Science Fair 2006

January 19th, 2006

sciencefairmedals.jpg
As you can see, my science fair project, Les Quilles Cosmiques qualified for provincials in March, and I also won an award for best physical sciences project. Mine was the only project in french, and only one of two to be about astronomy. My week of fame was extended again when this was published in the Casket:

It amazes me how I have my name printed on a certificate that I’m holding and they still spelt it wrong. And there’s Laird’s picture again.

How to Be the Green Apple

January 16th, 2006

apples2.jpg
That’s what I’d like to know. The image above is the poster for the Millennium Excellence scholarships, which I am currently working on. It’s the last of the big national scholarships I’m applying for this year. It asks some strange questions. For example: “Describe the community in which you live and how it has influenced the person you have become.”
I bet there are a lot of answers to the effect of: “My hometown is the most boring, un-accepting place in the world to live, which is the reason why I devoted myself to some obscure charity and studied like crazy, thereby fulfilling both the academic and humanitarian requirements of this scholarship”. I’d love to be able to write that and be such an amazing teenager that I wouldn’t have to worry about affecting my chances of getting the scholarship. Instead, I wrote about how St FX has enriched my life.
So. Many of you on the other end of the computer are probably wondering why I didn’t blog about my wisdom teeth until now - or actually a few sentences later. I was busy with science fair and life in general. Good news: I’ve finished applying to university. Back to my teeth: they came out, it didn’t hurt that much but it was uncomfortable nonetheless. I hardly remember of the friday before last after they stuck the anaesthesia needle in my arm. I vaguely remember waking up in another room, mumbling something about how amazing the unconscious mind is, being put in the car and eating pudding. I didn’t take more than two of the Codeine pills I was given. I’m pretty much healed now except for a small wound on one side. Ick. The taste of your own blood and saliva is very gross indeed.
I’ve been in a bit of a rut since lunch, when I discovered that I graphed the function of cotangent instead of cosecant on this morning’s pre-cal fiasco (test). If only scholarships were as easy as this:

This is the second time I’ve posted Laird’s photo on the internet through my blog. He’d probably be pretty pissed.
