Goodbye 2005

December 31st, 2005

As I sit on the green shag carpeting in the stereo room typing awkwardly on our notebook computer, I fell it is time to reminisce about the more notable events of the year. No, not the tsunami, hurricanes, or London bombings. No, not even the less intelligent stories of this year, such as the Natalie Holloway, Terri Shiavos, Crazy Scientologists, run-away brides, breakups of reality TV newlyweds or Purpose Driven Life hostages of the year. I, being the self-centered teenager that I am, will recollect the important events of my year, such as:
- The Florida band trip fiasco
- Reach For Dalhousie
- Romeo Dallaire
- Driver’s Ed. Classes
- Music of the Night “On Air”
- First attempt at getting published professionally
- finishing my first completed novel
- Student Council Elections (I was so scared I wasn’t going to be editor)
- Community Science Centre (meeting Dekker, Tony, George and the gang)
and most importantly:
- seeing the lead singer of Nickelback in the Westin Hotel (just kidding)

Neil Gaiman’s Christmas Cards

December 30th, 2005

Imagine getting this in your letterbox:
Nicholas Was…
older than sin, and his beard could grow no whiter. He wanted to die.
The dwarfish natives of the Arctic caverns did not speak his language, but conversed in their own, twittering tongue, conducted incomprehensible rituals, when they were not actually working in the factories.
Once every year they forced him, sobbing and protesting, into Endless Night. During the journey he would stand near every child in the world, leave one of the dwarves’ invisible gifts by its bedside. The children slept, frozen into time.
He envied Prometheus and Loki, Sisyphus and Judas. His punishment was harsher.
Ho.
Ho.
Ho.

The Lalas of 2005

December 27th, 2005

In homage of Fromage, a television show that honours the worst music videos of the year, I designate The La-Las, an award appointed by me for the worst lyrics in popular songs this year.
The La-Las are named after Ashlee Simpson

Cantique d’Amazon

December 23rd, 2005

Two days before the Christmas, and I have already amassed quite a collection of Amazon.com gift certificates from my parents and various aunts and uncles on both the Huffman and Holloway sides of my family. Not that I’m complaining.
I used to feel bad about the fact that I liked gift certificates instead of gifts that they’d actually bought me, but now I realize it is the best for everyone. They don’t waste their money and I get exactly what I want. It’s the best gift, considering that my parents don’t know the difference between Ashlee Simpson and Franz Ferdinand and that with not being able to work part-time and my all-essential panzoratti every week, I’m left with a meagre $20 in my bank account every month (not counting the investments I’m not allowed to touch).
So to all those who sent me money, thanks a lot. I hope I didn’t come off as sounding spoiled.
In any case, I won’t have that much time to enjoy what I get, because I’ve got university applications to fill out, and two summer camps to plan. I’ve got to start work on revamping my website so that my students don’t accidently stumble accross inappropriate material through something I link to. Tell it with pixels and my guestbook are going to go.
