Year of the Underdog

May 28th, 2005

The winner of the Student Council election turned out to be the candidate no one thought would win. John & Kate are not in the “in” crowd. The are not dead set on university. The showed up over an hour late for their speech. He took his shorts off in front of the election assembly. His main goal was to get a big top dance/rock show, a goal that is almost impossible. And yet, they won.
Well, at least it wasn’t the team I didn’t want to win.
In other news, we have a total of 9 days of school left. After that, there’s six exam days. Officially, our last day is something like the 24th, but I could leave by the 17th and have my report card stuff mailed to me, for the information of all those relatives out there. However, we have graduation that the band is supposed to play for on the 22nd, and Mr B-man is demanding participation or substitution.

Slogan Showdown

May 22nd, 2005

In the student counsel elections there are no evident issues. None of the campaign teams have said why you should vote for them, just that you should, because they refer to the popular culture of our generation: Napolean Dynamite, Homestar Runner, and Spongebob Squarepants are the obvious celebrity supporters. Nearly every team has at least one banner heralding that “(insert name here) offer you their protection!” This is a direct quote from ND, and if you didn’t know that then you obviously aren’t a teenager at this moment, or you’re like Pierre or Meaghan and ignore popculture. Here’s what has been seen in terms of campaigning around our school (more to be added later).
Holly & Justin: “If you like the colour yellow, and even if you don’t, vote H and J”, “Vote the HJ combo”
Trevor & Allana: small yellow posters with cheap smiley face clipart, with lines like, “Let’s make a deal” “Don’t pick your nose” “The key to a great year” and “Einstein was smart, you would be to if you voted for T and A”
Chris & Charlene: small posters with a picture of the two.
John & Kate: “There’s a reason why J and K go together in the alphabet” and “John and Kate, there’s no debate”
Sara & Cara: “Born in the eighties, Vote for the Ladies!” “If you like to go swimmin’ then vote for the women!”
Mitch & Laura: “Did you run over a person on a bike?”
Paddy & Courtney: “PC no longer stands for Progressive Conservative!”
So far I think Sara and Cara have the most effective lines. All the other teams should fire their campaigners.

Hitchhiker’s guide to the Movie

May 19th, 2005

I saw the Hitchhiker’s movie on the weekend, after much anticipation. I thought it was good. It didn’t do justice to the book, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. There were two main differences between the book and the movie: 1. the Vogons don’t chase them throughout the entire book, 2. Trillian and Dent don’t fall in love. Although the added love story was cute, it called for a little too much plot than the book really needed.
This is what the movie says about the romance between them:

Popularity Contest

May 18th, 2005

I’m back from the great band adventure, which can be summed up in one phrases: We lost, but we had a great time doing so. The rest of the school fails to realise our failure, because we came home totting two trophies: second and third place. The truth is, there were only two and three other bands in the categories we were competing in. But I had a lot of fun, and in the end, that’s all that matters.
I don’t play music because I want to be the best, I play music for the fun of it.
Without any segue, I will tell you that the student council presidential elections are coming up, the ultimate popularity contest. I think that it’s a figurehead position, making speaches to “represent” us. I’ll be voting for the person I get along with the best, since I’ll probably be on the student council, instead of who I would be the best to be president.
