This is what physics majors do when their experimental apparatus looks like a sailboat…

March 14th, 2009

… they put a masthead and a flag on it and pretend to be pirates.

Here’s a video of the thing in action:

Nonlinear Oscillator

Dal Changes the Sheets

April 5th, 2007

I live accross the road from a giant mattress.
No, seriously. The Wickwire field is made out of gravel, covered by a fake, spongy surface of recycled tires. It’s quite interesting to walk accross.
And every year they have to rip up all the tires, smooth out the gravel, and replace the field. This was what it looked like a few weeks ago.

The turf was ripped up and left in giant mounts on the field. Here’s a closer view:

Hap-py New-ew Yeah-ear

January 1st, 2007

The reason that I’m posting this video is not because I’m an Abba fan, or because I particularly care about the fact that our planet has once again rotated around the sun, but because one of the lyrics is “Who knows what we will find in 1989″.
It’s like they were oracles.

Falling Bodies

December 12th, 2006

All three of these video clips demonstrate the same phenomenon in pseudoscience. Can you guess what it is?
Note: this post has hardly anything to do with my life.

The Classic. “What? You just hit me in the head?”

This requires no translation, but if you’re bored just fast forward to about 1.5 minutes in.

It’s not just in the oriental tradition.

Anatomy of a Stupid Rumour

August 17th, 2006

August 3rd, 10:57 PM (Timezone unknown): Celebrity Fan makes a post about Jessica Simpson being quoted as saying that ex-husband Nick Lachey had a small penis in something called “Times Magazine”. The post has the fact that these quotes are only rumours highlighted, though this might be a post-rumour edit. The post begins with “Can this be true?” and it is obvious that the rumour is only hearsay and speculation. Times Magazine sounds a lot like Time Magazine, but Time Magazine has never interviewed Jessica Simpson.
August 15th, 10:55 AM (Timezone unknown): Ohnotheydidnt copies the post on Celebrity Fan almost word-for-word, minus the lead in “Can this be true?” and the rumours. Ohnotheydidnt puts Celebrity Fan as the source.
August 15th (time unknown): The same day, What Would Tyler Durden Do? posts a re-edited version of the Celebrity Fan post, with no mention of the fact that it may be a rumour. Still, no source on the actuall origins of the quotes.
August 16th, 10:00AM (Timezone unknown): The blog of VH1’s popculture TV show Best Week Ever reports the rumour as fact, pointing a source back to the WWTDD post. I can’t watch the show because I’m in Canada, but I would bet that this has a fairly good chance of making the TV show.
Do I care if the rumour is true? No. It’s stupid. What I am trying to demonstrate is that within a twenty-four hour period, an old post calling doubt to a speculative rumour on a non-mainstream website has become the source for ‘fact’ on the website of a national, widely watched TV show. The number of people who now believe this rumour could be in the tens of thousands, probably much more.

This lovely merchant operates in Fall River, California. I am still working on editing all of the 1006 pictures I took. It might be a while.

Toast.
I was cleaning up files on the old computer when I came across this video. I’m guessing that it’s almost two years old.

The Moral of this video:
Shorter Hair,
Same ol’ Pierre
