What’s with Feminism?

October 17th, 2006

Because all of my news comes from the Colbert Report:

I consider myself a feminist. But feminism seems to have more than one definition these days. When I say I am a feminist, I mean that I think all humans are equal in their human rights, and that I don’t think it’s right to be limited by the supposed capability of your gender or sexuality. But it seems like there is another side of feminism that believes that women are inherently better because they have some ‘nuturing’ instinct, and that women should control the world.
According to Steinem, women don’t listen to talk radio because they are more mature than the politics, and that the cuthroat and partisan aspects of the shows go against their caring nature.
Isn’t this the same argument that forced women to stay housewifes or into jobs like flight attendants and nurses - that women really just want to take care of people. A stereotype, even a positive one, is still a stereotype.
I would suggest another reason women don’t listen to talk radio. Maybe they don’t care about politics because they don’t feel represented in government. Maybe more women would have a chance in politics if they didn’t have to fight the social stereotype; that women are docile, weak-willed, and illogical.

Yip Yip Yip!

September 25th, 2006

Although I loved Sesame Street as a child almost as much as I loved Barney, these Martians used to terrify me. They come through the walls! At night! They look so creepy! And all they say is “Yip yip yip!”.
When I was younger, I had a stained-glass mirror across from my bed. One night, I remember having a nightmare that I had woken up, and in the mirror I could see the martians coming in and out, saying:
Yip yip yip Cathy unhuh unhuh yip yip yip alone unhuh unhuh yip yip yip…

Mirror Lake

May 24th, 2006

Today we took the tape off of our mural, which makes it done, officially. I suppose there are a lot of areas that could be improved, as you can probably tell from this photo.

We’ve been working on it on and off since November. There are a whole bunch of new murals being squared off everywhere in the school, but I really doubt that all of them will get finished by the time the artists graduate. We’ll see.

Dans Un Nom/In A Name
The above are links to the French and English versions of a story that I wrote for french class in March. There are a lot of mistakes in both and the English version is the translation and is about as close to the French version as possible, so the language is a bit restricted in that sense. Anyway, please read it and tell me what you think.

My First Novel

August 22nd, 2005

At 10:42 pm last night I wrote the last sentence of my book, Lost in Six Billion Dreams. It’s the first novel I’ve ever started that I finished. I’ve been working on it since about February-March 2004 and it’s about 53 000 words long. I suppose I should be thinking more about quality over quantity, and the true test is whether I’ll want to treasure or burn my manuscript. It feels great to finally have it done, but now it’s going to take me another two years to sift through and edit this trash.

Snow Dreams

January 28th, 2005

Well, my exams are finally over, at least for this semester, which means I don’t have school until next Wednesday, the day, coincidentally, which marks the last twenty four hours of being younger than sixteen.
Unfortnatly, for these days off school I am trapped in my house because the snow just keeps coming down and eventually we’re just blocked on all sides by a giant wall of snow that will probably stay there until spring. I’m starting to get cabin fever real bad. I’ve got a lot to do that is not school related that I’ve been waiting for some time off to do, but I can’t seem to focus. My new rule is that the amount of time I spend watching TV per day must equal the amount of time I spend reading or writing. We’ll see how long it lasts.
On a completely unrelated note, I’ve recently been having dreams that are really realistic. So realistic, infact, that I believe in them as if they actually happened once I wake up. Last night I dreamt that mom at started working again, and when I woke up I asked her what her new project was. She wasn’t, of course, but for an hour or so I really believed it was so. A couple nights ago I dreamt that I got to school and my timetable had been ripped off the inside of my locker. I got to school and wondered how I was going to figure out what classes I had, only to find that my timetable was still on the inside of my locker. When I mentioned this to my friend Danielle, she commented that it was the last day of classes for this semester, and that my timetable would be obsolete by the end of the day. Weird.
