Frodo Graph!

June 16th, 2006

This is completely unrelated to anything in my life… well maybe not, I did see the lead singer of Nickelback in Halifax back in October. And I also find this song really really annoying, so, naturally, I find this video hillarious.

Just a warning: some of the pictures aren’t appropriate for those who get offended at things.

Countdown of Full Days of Grade School Left + Worms of the Backyard

Warning: these pictures are not for those squeamish about bugs. They’re moth worms that infest our garden every year. There are so many of them, they seem to be coming down in chains.

Countdown of Full Days of Grade School Left + Party Pictures

June 12th, 2006

Heyyyyyyyyy maaaannn!!!!! Do you remember that kick-ass party at my house on Saturday where we all got hammered and ended up passing out on the floor of the piano room?
juneparty1.jpg
As you can probably guess, we weren’t really hammered. It was just late into the evening and we were tired. I guess the floor just seemed like a nice place. From near to far, Andrew, Stephanie, Mark and Pierre.
juneparty2.jpg
Look! Andrew’s got a beer mug! Further evidence of the presence of alcohol that night. Yeah, it really was once filled with ale… ginger ale, that is. And coke. We’re bad, bad kids. From left to right, Stephanie, Andrew, Erin, and Robert.
juneparty3.jpg
France, Canada and Japan form the alliance for countries whose principal vowel sound is an a. Left to right, Pierre, Mark and Ryu (Roy).
juneparty4.jpg
I suppose this is hard to explain, but we were trying to imitate the cover of the Super Mastermind board game. While Pierre may not be effective as the femme fatale, Michael does look maniacal.

Countdown of Full Days of Grade School Left + Pictures

June 4th, 2006

Here are some pictures that Roy took. The first is of a bonfire at Erin’s house. From the left is Laird, behind Laird is Mark’s PEI friend Alan, Me, Mark and Michael.
bonfire2a.jpg
The second is undeniable proof that Pierre, the straightest of the straights, at a genuine house party where there was drugs and alcohol and lots of peer pressure and he didn’t drink!
pierreiscrazy1.jpg
Even though I was invited by two different people in the house, I didn’t go, because I was a bit sick that night. Plus, the season finale of Battlestar Galactica was on. There’s no way that could beat hanging out with a bunch of drunk people.

Natl. Concours Oratoire

May 28th, 2006

I’m back from Ottawa. I didn’t win anything but I had a really fun time. I met so many really interesting people, and the speeches in my category were beyond amazing. We went to tour the parliment buildings and we got to see a really good french theatrical performance.
concoursoratoire.jpg
On the way home I met Peter McKay on the airplane back to Halifax. He sat in hospitality, not business class, just like me. I guess not even Canada’s foreign minister can sit there.
PS: the run-off election was on Friday. Kelly Anne and Emily won! It should be interesting: there hasn’t been a girl/girl pairing in charge for donkey’s years.

White Out

February 1st, 2006

whiteout2.jpg

The big storm that had loomed over Boston last week hit Nova Scotia last night, effectively shutting down the province. This morning when my alarm clock woke me up I was a few seconds in to a very, very, long list of cancellations. Everything is closed: all school boards, all pre-schools, all community activities, provincial government offices, universities, everything. Even though the fact that school is cancelled today only means I’ll have to take my Chemistry exam on Friday (which is my birthday btw), it’s still so much better than waking up to the sound of “Well, John’s snow blower shop is out of luck again today…”
Exams are going pretty well, I’d have to say. So far I’ve taken English 12 Provincial and Pre-Cal. English was a waste of time. We had to write an essay on how to deal with the environmental effects of using plastic bags. One of the questions on a poem called Red Leaves was “Authors sometimes use other words to describe images. What do the “little fires” in line 1 signify?”. Pre-Cal was okay too, except that I was a bit shaken up because of an unexpected discovery on the way to school.
Our next-door neighbours (the hillbillies, not the students) have a bathroom window that lines up with the window to our computer room. Sometimes our neighbours use the shower WITHOUT SHUTTING THE CURTAINS. I find this kind of gross, but luckily you can only see in at certain angles of the computer room. The real problem, however, is not that we can see them but that they can see us.
The morning of my Pre-Cal exam, as I was walking through my backyard to get to school, I found a bag of cheap Valentine

How to Be the Green Apple

January 16th, 2006

apples2.jpg
That’s what I’d like to know. The image above is the poster for the Millennium Excellence scholarships, which I am currently working on. It’s the last of the big national scholarships I’m applying for this year. It asks some strange questions. For example: “Describe the community in which you live and how it has influenced the person you have become.”
I bet there are a lot of answers to the effect of: “My hometown is the most boring, un-accepting place in the world to live, which is the reason why I devoted myself to some obscure charity and studied like crazy, thereby fulfilling both the academic and humanitarian requirements of this scholarship”. I’d love to be able to write that and be such an amazing teenager that I wouldn’t have to worry about affecting my chances of getting the scholarship. Instead, I wrote about how St FX has enriched my life.
So. Many of you on the other end of the computer are probably wondering why I didn’t blog about my wisdom teeth until now - or actually a few sentences later. I was busy with science fair and life in general. Good news: I’ve finished applying to university. Back to my teeth: they came out, it didn’t hurt that much but it was uncomfortable nonetheless. I hardly remember of the friday before last after they stuck the anaesthesia needle in my arm. I vaguely remember waking up in another room, mumbling something about how amazing the unconscious mind is, being put in the car and eating pudding. I didn’t take more than two of the Codeine pills I was given. I’m pretty much healed now except for a small wound on one side. Ick. The taste of your own blood and saliva is very gross indeed.
I’ve been in a bit of a rut since lunch, when I discovered that I graphed the function of cotangent instead of cosecant on this morning’s pre-cal fiasco (test). If only scholarships were as easy as this:
