Coady Image Sets

The Client:

The Coady International Institute is a landmark organization of Antigonish County and St. Francis Xavier University's campus. Established in the late 1950s by the Reverand Moses Coady, it aims to spread the participatory approach to community development. It does so by offering diploma and certificate programs to participants from around the world.

The Challenge

The Coady relies mostly on fundraising to support its diploma programs and for the multi-million dollar capital campaign, which will see it moved to a new, central location in Antigonish town. Therefore, it would like to offer a variety of media such as podcasts, video and images on the website in order to attract donors. However, the Coady webpage is also used by participants, offen in third world countries, who use the webpage to apply for programs, or keep in contact with their facillitators in Canada. These participants, coming from poorer regions of the world, do not have the benefit of high-speed internet or up-to-date browsers and computers. Therefore, using Flash or JavaScript is out of the question and images need to be scaled and saved at a lower resolution. The system is also intended to be used by Coady staff to upload images, most of whom have no training with image manipulation.

The Solution

php was used to create an upload interface which scales and saves images uploaded in a set to a reasonable size. MySQL was used to save captions and information about the sets.
